Dr. Larry Paulson's Comments on Lake Mead Pollution

Dr. Paulson's Response to Perchlorate

"In a 556-page study, a team of federal scientists put forward a hypothesis that perchlorate might be safely consumed at levels of about 1 part per billion (ppb) over long periods without causing damage to health." "In mid-December, the water authority measured perchlorate at 14 ppb near intake valves at Lake Mead, Davis said. Measurements taken weekly in 2001 averaged 10 ppb, he said." http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2002/Jan-19-Sat-2002/news/17909766.html

What landowners would tolerate dumping perchlorate or other contaminants in their water supply? No one I know of, yet we've had to accept it as common practice in our public water supply, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, no less. Why do we tolerate pollution of a public water system, when none of us would accept it on our private property?

Brenda Pohlmann, Chief of Las Vegas Operations for the State Environmental Protection Division, says in this article, "we're a little bit leery about getting excited about this 1 ppb until it has gone through the review process and they finalize it." The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and Southern Nevada Water Authority never seem to get "excited" about the on-going pollution of our drinking water supply, or degradation of recreation in Lake Mead. You may recall the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection approved permits last summer to discharge even more treated sewage into Lake Mead, six miles upstream of our drinking water intakes, despite the awful "green slime" algae bloom and tremendous public opposition "The water is safe to drink," they say, or "this algae isn't toxic, the lake is safe for swimming." They claim, "we've got a committee studying the problem," or "we're implemented plans to correct it." But, nothing ever seems to change, does it? We must, therefore, demand from our public officials more responsible protection of our water supply, the kind we pay for and have a right to expect. Please send messages to Ms. Pohlman (bpohlman@govmail.state.nv.us), the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection Administrator, Allen Biaggi (abiaggi@govmail.state.nv.us) and the Southern Nevada Water Authority General Manager, Pat Mulroy (patricia.mulroy@lvvwd.com) and see if you can get them more "excited" about stopping pollution of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. While you're at it, take a minute and send a message to your local, elected officials. They need to hear from you, too. Their e-mail addresses are listed below:
